Dead Sea

No trip to Israel/Jordan is complete without a trip to the Dead Sea. I brushed off my very hungover self and caught the bus from Jerusalem. It took about an hour but finally got to Ein Gedi a cool little town on the coast. I stripped down and jumped in and like everyone else was amazed on how you just float on the top. It is very salty so make sure to keep it out of your eyes and mouth, also if you had too many beers the night before or ate a shwarma that didn’t agree with your stomach there might be something else burning also…

Israeli Army

Coming across the border into Israel I was blown away by the beautiful border guards. I was pulled aside for questioning and all I wanted to do was ask for this girl’s number, I didn’t of course as I am alive and still writing you posts. In Israel women have to join the army for 2 years and men for 3 years and you start at 18. Everywhere you look you can see a gorgeous lady holding a massive machine gun (super sexy!). The only question I have for the Israeli government now is where can I sign up?

Dana, Jordan

I met a girl named Randi from Denmark and we decided to do a trip from Amman somewhere. We chose Dana in the south and packed our days packs and went to the bus station. It took a good 2 hours for the bus to fill up but finally we were on our way. A long bus ride later we got to the town of Dana, where we were picked up and driven to our hotel. The town only had 3 families left living in it and was situated on the edge of a hill. It was amazing to see this green nature reserve when all we had seen so far in Jordan was desert. We got settled into our room and went for a hike up to a spring to watch the sunset. We were invited over by a group of Bedouin to wash our feet in the spring and watch the sunset as we tried to communicate through broken English.

Back at the hotel we met a couple from Canada/Israel and decided to split a guided tour in the park with them the next day. After a great dinner, Randi and I went out for a walk to check out the stars and on the way back we got invited to a fire with some guys drinking tea and smoking Sheesha. We joined them and learned they were part of the Jordanian Special Forces, through lots of effort we managed to have a conversation. We finally excused ourselves to head back to our room.

We were eaten alive all night but managed to get up in the morning to go on our hike. Our guide was great and we had a nice tea break half way through. After the hike the couple drove us a couple of towns over and we caught the bus back to Amman. We were quite happy with our decision to leave the hustle and bustle of the big city, even though we managed to get much less sleep there.

Petra

This site really blew me away, it was just voted one of the 7 wonders of the world and I agree with that. The massive structures that they built out of stone are out of this world. It was hard to believe that Indiana Jones found the Holy Grail here just 70 years ago. On a busy day Petra gets over 7000 visitors, I was one of 200 people there on the day I went. I wandered for hours with only the ruins and the views for company. It was a scorcher for a day so of course there was no dry underwear by the end of it. Here are some pictures from my day.

Wadi Rum

I got up at 5am to catch the early bus out to Wadi Rum, I was lucky enough to meet a girl on a way to an exam to help me out at the crazy bus station. We piled into this little bus and we were on our way. I got out at the junction of Wadi Rum and started walking down the highway. Only 3 cars went by until my hitchhiking worked (I started to show more leg) and I got picked up by a semi truck. He drove me most of the way until I was picked up by another van and taken the rest of the way. The desert was an amazing red color and it went on forever, I hired a driver and he took me around to a bunch of the sites. It was still morning but the little hiking I was doing was taking it out of me in the heat. The cliffs surrounding me were huge and I would not want to be lost out here alone. After visiting you can really tell why this is a must stop on the Jordan itinerary. If you are not into crowds (and you are okay with heat) go during the low season of summer, it was really only me and the desert and I got a real feeling of loneliness out there.

Swimming in Dubai

I was told that I needed to feel the water temperature at the beach in Dubai. So Meghan and I hoped in a cab out to a beach. We walked around a little before and my boxers were instantly soaked, can you say swass? We eventually got to the beach and it was right into my swim shorts. Jumped in the water and could not believe how hot it was, it was warmer than a bath tub. It was about 32C, which is crazy so we swam for a while and then got out to watch the sun go down. The only thing that could have made it better was some cold beers, but we felt it was better to stay out of prison.

Back to the Roots

The main reason we took this trip to Scandinavia was that my Dad’s side of the family is from Norway. After doing the main travel destinations in Norway it was time to make the long trek to Odda where it all began. We got up at 5 in the morning and piled into the rent a car, it was pouring rain as we made the 4 hour drive to Odda. When we got there we only had time for a quick walk around of the town. My great grandpa grew up there before being swindled to Northern Manitoba and then eventually Powell River. Odda was a little town at the end of a Fjord and I could imagine how isolated it was back in those times. It was a stunning backdrop with tall mountains on both sides coming down to the water, I could not imagine moving from here to brown Northern Manitoba. The day ended with another 3 hour drive to Bergen where we caught a flight out to Stockholm. Very few people get to travel to the place it all began and this was definitely something checked off the bucket list of life.

Oslo Travel Tips

Here are a few tips for travelling Oslo.

Drinking– Alcohol in restaurants and bars are ridiculously expensive, around $12CAD for a pint of beer. To be able to afford a night on the town without having to give out special favours in the men’s washroom I strongly suggest a power pre-drink. Beers in the store are about $3CAD for a 6 pack of tallies, a much more affordable price.

Women– Women here in Oslo are gorgeous; they will leave you with a sore neck. They are very approachable and will enjoy speaking with you in English. So get off your ass and cozy up next to that blonde girl at the end of the bar.

Transportation– Public transportation is fantastic here. The metro will get you almost anywhere you want to go, and when it shuts down around 2am the bus will take you where you want to go all night long. As far as taxi’s go, good luck trying to get one around 4am after a Saturday night, the streets seem busier than during the day.

Sights– For those interested in things other than partying… any more readers still with me? There are a few great sights to see in Oslo.

Opera House– If you are into architecture, head down to the Opera House on the water front. It is quite a sight with a lot of the building under water. It is a very impressive building and I strongly suggest a visit.

 

Frogner Park- The other great sight to see is Frogner Park which houses the Vigeland Sculpture Park. It is a huge green park with tons of trees and grass fields, a perfect spot for a day in the sun. The sculpture park is definitely a sight, with hundreds of statues all in different poses. The park brings out everybody’s immature side as they are all naked, and you will find many people taking various sexually suggestive photos.
